Goodnight Moon was Jessicas all-time favorite book. She saved her old, tattered, and worn copy I bought her when she was a baby... almost 22 years ago.
*
I read her this story every night, for about 4 years.
Then she learned to read herself, and would recite the verses for me, at the kitchen table, while I did the dinner dishes.
*
I miss Goodnight Moon. Looking for the mouse. Hearing her quietly say the words sometimes while I read.
*
If I could go back in time for 10 minutes, I'd be sitting on the floor next to a crib or bunk bed, with a small girl whose head smelled like Johnson's baby shampoo ...she'd be wearing fresh pyjamas with The Little Mermaid on them...and we'd be reading Goodnight Moon.

Goodnight Moon
by
Margaret Wise Brown
~
In the great green room
there was a telephone
and a red balloon
and a picture of...
The cow jumping over the moon
And there were three little bears sitting on chairs
And two little kittens
And a pair of mittens
And a little toy house
And a young mouse
And a comb and a brush and a bowl full of mush
And a quiet old lady who was whispering "hush"...
*
Goodnight room
Goodnight moon
Goodnight cow jumping over the moon
Goodnight light and the red balloon
Goodnight bears
Goodnight chairs
Goodnight kittens and goodnight mittens
Goodnight clocks and goodnight socks
Goodnight little house and goodnight mouse
Goodnight comb and goodnight brush
Goodnight nobody
Goodnight mush
And Goodnight to the old lady whispering "hush".
*
Goodnight stars
Goodnight air
Goodnight noises everywhere.
